CHOMSKY, NOAM. Just about everything he wrote is good. Examines official lies. Useful though harps too much on U.S. lies and not enough on those of others.

HAYAKAWA, S.I. Professor who made semantics easy to study. It seems like a useful guide to seeing through the verbal fog, but it failed its creator during campus unrest in the '60s.

LANGUAGE IN THOUGHT AND ACTION. Basic textbook; has been through many editions.

DAWKINS, RICHARD.

THE BLIND WATCHMAKER. Takes a strict constructionist view of Darwinian theory, but is a great counter to the "Second Law of Thermodynamics" argument against evolution.
THE SELFISH GENE. First crack at explaining the propagation of ideas ("memes"), derived from genetic theory. It's useful, but don't get swallowed by it.
FEYNMAN, RICHARD P.

- WHAT DO YOU CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK? Autobiography of physicist and granddaddy of hackers. While working on the Manhattan Project, he amused himself by cracking safes. The second book picks up with his misadventures on the Rogers Commission, which investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
  HOFFMANN, DR. ALBERT LSD: MY PROBLEM CHILD. Personal account by the guy who invented it.
  HOFSTADTER, DOUGLAS R. GODEL, ESCHER, BACH: AN ETERNAL GOLDEN BRAID. 500-page essay on mathematics, logic loops, recursion, etc. I've never been able to finish it, but what I've read is pretty good.
  MCPHEE, JOHN. THE CURVE OF BINDING ENERGY. 1974. A-bomb hi-jinx. (1998: What? Terrorists bomb the World Trade Center? Never in a million years!.)
  THE REALITY CLUB.
  - SPECULATIONS. Discussions among heavy thinkers. In one chapter they tackle meme theory.
